First Saturday Jazz Piano Series
New Havens premier jazz bassist, Jeff Fuller, has invited three acclaimed jazz pianists to join him for a new series of recitals, First Saturday Jazz at Brent Evans Piano Shop, 963 State Street, New Haven, CT. The series begins on Saturday, April 4th at 8:00 pm with Brazilian pianist Luiz Simas and bassist Fuller performing as a duo. The second installment on May 2nd at 8:00 pm will feature the renowned pianist Don Friedman, and the series will wind up on June 6th at 8:00 pm with Connecticuts great jazz pianist, Kent Hewitt.
Luiz Simas was born in Rio de Janeiro and has lived in New York since 1989. A composer, singer and pianist, he is influenced by jazz and bossa nova, along with Brazilian popular, traditional and modern music. He has given sold out performances in venues such as Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall and the Oslo Jazz Festival, and in jazz clubs, such as Mistura Fina in Rio and Birdland in NYC. He has released 5 CDs, including his newest, “Cafun”.
Joined by bassist Jeff Fuller, the program for First Saturday Jazz on April 4th will include Brazilian music by well-known composers such as Jobim, Ernesto Nazareth and Villa-Lobos, as well as Luiz’s own original compositions, some of which are in “chorinho” style, a delightful mixture of European salon music with lively rhythms of African origin.
“Luiz Simas is not only a wonderful musician, singer and composer, he is an engaging performer who draws his audience into his witty, joyful, sensuous musical world. Simas epitomizes the fantasies we non-Brazilians have about that wonderful country, and with him, we all get to be Brazilian, at least for the a couple hours!” – Judy Carmichael, pianist
